Weight Loss (Bariatric)
Surgery in Brisbane
Dr Aaron Lim offers three primary bariatric procedures, each tailored to your medical history, BMI, and personal health goals. Surgery is one part of a holistic program built around lifelong success.
About the Procedure
What is Bariatric Surgery?
Bariatric surgery encompasses a range of procedures designed to facilitate significant weight loss by modifying the digestive system. These procedures work by either restricting the amount of food the stomach can hold, reducing the absorption of nutrients, or a combination of both.
By altering metabolic hormones, weight loss surgery may help improve obesity-related conditions such as type 2 diabetes, sleep apnoea and high blood pressure.
Surgical Procedures
Three Procedures. One Expert.
Dr Aaron Lim offers all three primary bariatric procedures. The right choice is determined by your medical history, BMI, and personal health goals, decided together at your consultation.
Sleeve Gastrectomy
Gastric Sleeve
Approximately 80% of the stomach is removed laparoscopically, leaving a narrow sleeve. The procedure also reduces ghrelin, the hunger hormone, which can reduce appetite.
May suit
A simpler procedure with no intestinal rerouting.

Classic Bypass
Roux-en-Y Gastric Bypass
A small stomach pouch connects directly to the middle of the small intestine, bypassing the rest of the stomach. This triggers hormonal changes that can improve blood sugar control.
May suit
Patients with type 2 diabetes or chronic gastro-oesophageal reflux disease (GORD), as it can improve these conditions.

One-Anastomosis Bypass
Mini Gastric Bypass
A long, narrow stomach pouch with a single connection (anastomosis) to the small intestine. Combines the restrictive effect of the sleeve with a malabsorptive bypass.
May suit
A bypass with a slightly less complex reconstruction. May also suit patients with type 2 diabetes.

FAQ
Common Questions
Am I a candidate for weight loss surgery?
Generally, candidates have a BMI over 35, or BMI over 30 with an obesity-related condition such as Type 2 Diabetes or sleep apnoea. Dr Lim will assess your full medical history, lifestyle, and goals at your consultation to determine the most appropriate pathway.
Which procedure is right for me?
The choice depends on your BMI, medical history, and goals. The Gastric Sleeve suits patients wanting a simpler procedure with no intestinal rerouting. The Roux-en-Y may suit patients with severe GORD or type 2 diabetes. The Mini Gastric Bypass is a bypass with a slightly simpler reconstruction. Dr Lim will guide you to the best fit at your consultation.
How long is the recovery from bariatric surgery?
Most patients stay 1–2 nights in hospital. You can return to light activity within 2–3 weeks and full activity by 4–6 weeks. Recovery varies by procedure and individual, and Dr Lim and his team provide a structured, personalised recovery plan.
Is weight loss surgery covered by Medicare or private health insurance?
Consultation fees attract a Medicare rebate. The surgical procedure itself is typically covered in part by private health insurance, depending on your level of cover. Some out-of-pocket costs apply. We are happy to provide a detailed cost breakdown at your consultation.
Will I need vitamin supplements after surgery?
Yes. All bariatric procedures require lifelong nutritional monitoring. The type and extent of supplementation depends on the procedure, as bypass procedures require more comprehensive supplementation than the Gastric Sleeve. Dr Lim's team monitors your levels at every follow-up.
